The Roman view examined here illustrates one of the most famous places in the Eternal City, where the painter, as in a snapshot, immortalizes a precise moment in the urban life of the time, enlivened by numerous elegantly dressed men and women.
Specifically, we see the majestic Piazza del Campidoglio, in the center of which is the bronze equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius, surrounded by Palazzo Senatorio, Palazzo dei Conservatori, and Palazzo Nuovo; the work highlights the Capitoline Cordonata, the staircase designed by Michelangelo Buonarroti that connects Piazza del Campidoglio with the underlying Piazza d'Aracoeli; on the balustrade of the staircase, at the top, are two large Roman-era sculptures of the Dioscuri, the twins Castor and Pollux.
An emblematic corner for the history of Rome, the Capitoline Hill is a celebratory and very important place since Roman times: it was in this walled area that the main temples were located (among them those dedicated to the so-called Capitoline Triad: Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva) and it was always in this place that the Tabularium stood, a building of memory, in which the public archives of the State were kept, from the decrees of the Senate to the peace treaties.
The painting, datable to the first half of the 18th century, shows a clear reference to 18th-century Venetian Vedutismo both in its compositional aspects and style. It is attributable to the workshop of the Lucca painter Gaetano Vetturali (17011-1783), who achieved considerable success in his hometown and in Tuscany for the original landscape interpretation of Venetian memory and for the evocative scenographic effects.
A pictorial personality characterized by an eclecticism of interests and works, Vetturali specialized in the creation of views of Venetian taste and subject inspired by Canaletto and of Roman or Florentine ruins and panoramas, always enjoying great success.
The canvases under examination show the main characteristics of his production, the precise rendering of the individual architectures, adhering to the truth to the point of configuring themselves as historical documents of the landscape of the time. Although his training in Venice is plausible, Vetturali spent most of his painting career in Tuscany, in Lucca, where, with his workshop, he satisfied numerous local commissions oriented towards the 'vedutistic capriccio' tradition in the wake of Marieschi, and with strong ties to Francesco Albotto.
