The proposed painting, of remarkable quality and artistic level, is a work executed in the second half of the seventeenth century by an author from the Roman area.
The episode illustrates the rest of the goddess of the hunt Diana, depicted asleep lying in the shade of a tree, semi-nude with only a veil placed to cover her groin and lying on a blue sheet, after a hunting trip, with the spear still in her hands and the quiver placed in front of her. The goddess, ready to enjoy the pleasures of a relaxing sleep, is surrounded and protected by a host of fluttering putti, some playing with one of her hounds, some enjoying riding a branch, while others are intent on holding up a red drape, as if to protect her privacy from possible prying eyes.
The analysis of the stylistic and figurative characters, as anticipated, shows its belonging to the Roman school of the full seventeenth century, capable of expressing a refined style, and managing to blend the Baroque language, by definition sumptuous, with elements of classicist ancestry.
It is therefore a painting of immediate beauty, capable of uniting the remarkable pictorial fineness with a scenic construction capable of satisfying even the most demanding gaze.
In particular, the work shows evident reminiscences with the Cortonese environment, and precisely with the figure of Guillaume Courtois known as "il Borgognone" (Saint Hippolyte 1626 - Rome 1679). In his painting, and therefore also in the proposed work, emerges a classicist figurative culture with influences from typically Baroque legacies, from which his formation in the workshop of Pietro da Cortona is evident.
The painting, in good condition, has a slight patina of time that we have decided not to clean, since the work remains perfectly readable. It has a professionally executed relining, and is complete with a pleasant antique carved wooden frame.
