In the foreground, on the right, stands a monumental stone structure, a remnant of ancient classical architecture, while on the left, a large natural arch frames the view of a distant village, immersed in a golden sunset light. The scene is populated by peasants and wayfarers caught in moments of daily life, according to a poetic typical of 18th-century Venetian painting, attentive to the atmospheric rendering and the narrative insertion of figures in the landscape. The balance between architecture, nature, and humanity returns an idealized and melancholic image of the decadence of time, in line with the Arcadian and pre-Romantic taste widespread in Northern Italy during this period.
