Empire Style Walnut Fireplace Surround, Italy, First Quarter of the 19th Century

Early 19th century fireplace surround from the Empire period. Made of walnut and veneered on the upper entablature with walnut burl; frame with two rows of gilded successive leaves applied with gesso; in the cornice, an egg-carved gilded frame and two large leaves carved and gilded on the uprights.
