Description
Holy Family with Saint Anne
Oil on canvas
cm 75.5x57
In the center, the Virgin Mary is clearly distinguished, seated with a halo, while she looks at the Child Jesus, who is held in the arms of another elderly woman; most likely Saint Anne, Mary's mother. Next to them are two other male figures: one could be Saint Joseph (behind Mary, with a beard and dark cloak), and the other, on the left, a possible Saint Joachim, Mary's father. This composition is typical of depictions known as "The Holy Family with Saint Anne", where the generation of Saint Anne, Mary and Jesus represents a theme of spiritual and dynastic continuity in Christianity.
The pictorial style highlights characteristics of the late Baroque period:
Rich theatricality in poses and gestures.
Ample and draped clothing with careful drapery.
Accentuated chiaroscuro, with dramatic lighting effects.
Idealized but expressive faces, which communicate an emotional narrative.
The work is probably datable to the 17th or 18th century, consistent with Italian or Spanish devotional painting of the Baroque or early Rococo period. The subject, warm colors, and rendering of the figures are typical of religious painting of this period.
