The painting depicts a vast nocturnal panorama, typical of the Mediterranean hinterland, where a cylindrical tower stands out as the protagonist in the center of the canvas among a series of fortified villages. The scene is illuminated laterally by the aura of light from the moonlight with a very evocative chiaroscuro effect. The painting can be attributed to the painting of the Flemish landscape artist Pieter Mulier, known as Cavalier Tempesta after his stay in Italy, where he worked and trained artistically first in Rome, then in Genoa, attracted by the sea and the Ligurian landscape, and finally in Milan until his death. His works confirmed his restless spirit and were mainly divided between the representation of landscapes characterized by an unstable and never serene atmosphere, and the often nocturnal and moonlit seascapes, always stormy.
The canvas presented here depicts a wide-ranging nocturnal view and stands out for a pleasant sensation of tranquility with silent fishermen along the waterway who liven up and color the scene.
