This beautiful canvas depicting a complex architectural capriccio displays all the stylistic characteristics of the renowned Neapolitan Baroque school.
Between the 17th and 18th centuries, a large number of excellent artists distinguished themselves by producing magnificent paintings with imaginative and spectacular architectural compositions.
The work presented here, executed in the early 1700s, is an excellent example of the skill of Gennaro Greco, one of the most accomplished representatives of the Neapolitan Baroque school, which specialized in these extremely articulated and highly theatrical capriccios.
Gennaro Greco (Naples, 1663-1714), known as Mascacotta because of his face disfigured by a burn suffered at a young age, creates his canvases with a very severe and unadorned approach, where tall, imposing columns near port landscapes stand out against blue skies.
The elongated figures that animate the scenes recall the characters of Nordic painting and are never preponderant in the whole painting but are limited to making it more alive, leaving the role of protagonists to the monuments.
Note the exceptional three-dimensional effect that the Author manages to achieve thanks to a perfect perspective view and a marked play of light and shadow highlighted by the monumentality of the buildings.
The remarkable depth is instead obtained from the sequential view beyond the columns, of a fortified village, further away a bridge and finally, where the gaze is lost, the silhouette of a mountain, increasingly blurred due to the atmosphere.
The work is in excellent condition and is complete with a beautiful antique gilded frame.
