Circle of Michael Coxie (Mechelen, 1499 – Mechelen, 1592)
Ecce Homo with Pontius Pilate
Oil on panel (applied on panel)
Flemish School, 16th-17th Century
112 x 81 cm - framed 121 x 90 cm
The proposed painting is the work of a Flemish painter active between the 16th and 17th centuries from the circle of Michael Coxie (Mechelen, 1499 – Mechelen, 1592), following the famous compositions of the great master, who brilliantly engaged with this classic of religious painting on several occasions [1], where the dramatic style is realized with a skillful play of light and shadow.

The Ecce Homo is the evangelical episode during which Jesus, awaiting his condemnation and after the flagellation, is presented to the people by Pilate, then the Roman governor of Judea, who we see portrayed here at his side.
The canvas immortalizes the moment when the Savior accepts his final destiny: in his face there is not only humiliation but a moment of profound introspection and emotion. He is portrayed with a crown of thorns placed on top of his long hair and stripped of his clothes, with his hands tied and crossed, alluding to his immediate crucifixion on Golgotha.
‘’Ecce homo’’, which literally means Here is the Man, was the phrase pronounced by Pilate himself to designate the scourged Jesus and to curry favor with the crowd, aware that he had condemned an innocent man.
This type of representation of Christ will be very common in the 16th century, giving rise to particularly intense creations, especially in the Flemish area.
We are certainly not in front of an ‘easy’ work, but one that is equally capable of arousing emotion, without leaving even those who do not prefer subjects of such strong emotional impact indifferent. Whipped and mocked while awaiting his martyrdom, it is striking that his face appears sad, resigned, but not suffering, to evoke the compassion he granted to his tormentors.
The panel is in good condition, considering the era, and is in turn applied to a wooden support to consolidate its structure.
