Saint Sebastian
Bolognese School
Circle of Guido Reni (Bologna, 1575-1642)
Oil on canvas
17th century period
Canvas cm. 75 x 92
Frame cm. 94 x 110
Excellent condition
The canvas depicts a highly fascinating image of Saint Sebastian, the Holy Martyr who has inspired the most celebrated masters since the birth of Christian art.
The naked and vigorous body of the Warrior, bound, pierced, and defenselessly exposed to the viewer, has stimulated the pictorial and creative abilities of great artists, much like the images of Christ on the cross.
This important 17th-century work is a splendid example of Bolognese painting, which sees the genius of Guido Reni spread through a circle of excellent followers and collaborators, many of whom distinguished themselves, obtaining great personal recognition.
The author places the naked torso of the Saint at the center of the canvas in an oblique position with his hands tied behind his back, accentuating an excellent anatomical rendering and a masterly realism of the complexion.
The face is turned towards the opposite side to emphasize the elegant twisting movement of the body, covered in the lower abdomen by a white cloth.
The excellent condition of the painting allows for an optimal view of the sculptural effect that the Master imprints on the figure.
Beautiful 19th-century frame in finely carved wood with gilded profiles.
