Roman school, 17th - 18th century
Circle of Giovanni Battista Salvi, known as Sassoferrato (Sassoferrato 1609 – Rome 1685)
Virgin in Prayer
Oil on canvas (48 x 40 cm - Splendid antique frame 71 x 64 cm)
This splendid Virgin in Prayer, the work of a Roman painter active between the 17th and 18th centuries, is ascribed to the pictorial manner of Giovanni Battista Salvi, known as Sassoferrato; the subject draws inspiration from the most successful and celebrated inventions of the great master from the Marches, which his workshop took up in conspicuous examples, inserting countless variations relating to the inclination of the head, the position of the hands and the cropping of the framing.
Following the success of this Marian image, his entourage and the Master himself painted a considerable quantity; among the most famous, we remember those at the Prado Museum and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, in the Chiesa della Salute in Venice, at the Pinacoteca in Perugia and at the Diocesan Museum of Recanati.
Recognized as one of the most successful artists of the 17th century thanks to his extraordinary sense of harmony and colorism, Salvi, with his painting, met the taste of the public of that era, fully reflecting its aesthetic canons.
A pupil of Domenichino and a refined interpreter of the Renaissance tradition, in particular of Raphael, Sassoferrato elaborates a style of extraordinary formal perfection, with a precise design and refined Marian images.
The critical and collecting fortune is evident from the countless autograph and workshop replicas, but also, as in our case, executed later by a painter from the Roman area active between the two centuries.
The painting is in good condition: the painted surface is well preserved.
Complete with a magnificent antique carved and gilded wooden frame, which perfectly matches and highlights the beauty of the canvas.
