Interesting painting depicting a shipwreck scene of a sailing ship at sea during a storm near a fortification perched on rocks. The painter who executed it is an artist active in the mid-seventeenth century, fascinated by the marine scenes disseminated by those dissident landscape painters, such as Salvador Rosa, Filippo Napolitano, and many others of Flemish- Dutch origin.
It is possible to connect the work in question with the restless seascapes that frequently depict shipwrecks by the Flemish painter Matthieu Van Plattenberg called Monsù Montagna (Antwerp 1608-1660), with a quick review of his pictorial catalog, we can note that there are many coincidences, such as the type of boats, with red flags, the same topographic quality of the settlements, the atmospheres and protoromantic verve with which these scenarios are corroborated.
The painting is in excellent condition and includes the contemporary gilded and finely engraved frame with floral volutes of central Italian manufacture.
On the back there is a Verner stamp, with a dating. It would seem that these writings are posthumous to the period of execution of our painting.
The measures are: 95 x 73 cm canvas only; 117 x 95cm including the frame.
