This antique Louis XV bedside table, delightful in its workmanship and contained dimensions, is entirely veneered in walnut, intact in its components despite its age, the work of Palermo craftsmen of the mid-18th century.
The design of the chest of drawers faithfully reflects the aesthetic requirements of mid-18th-century furniture, intolerant of straight lines and instead dedicated to the grace of the curved line, thus appearing wavy on all three fronts, in the "en cabriole" legs and in the graceful apron under the doors.
It is precisely the silhouette of the apron (along with other details, to be honest) that unequivocally marks the Sicilian origin of this bedside table. Its appearance is animated and dominated by a vibrant and nervous walnut veneer arranged symmetrically to form a rhomboidal pattern on the front of the two doors and on the front of the drawer underneath them. The shaped top is embellished with a beautiful slab of Aleppo breccia marble from the same period. The two doors mentioned above conceal a large compartment, and finally a small drawer centered by a metal escutcheon closes the design at the bottom.
Sicilian cabinetmaking, especially that of its main city, Palermo, reached unsurpassed levels in the field of cabinetmaking around the mid-1700s. Sensitive to the novelties coming from the rest of the peninsula, it was able to translate the language of the time by innovating it with technical/formal solutions of primary importance that give the Sicilian 18th century its own dignity, also exempt from the capital of the kingdom, the Naples of the Bourbons.
The great value of an 18th-century Palermo bedside table lies above all in its rarity, in its scarcity on the antique market. To this is added, in the specific case of our chest of drawers, the excellent state of conservation, the beautiful patina that the wood has assumed over the centuries, never touched and never restored. A piece of furniture handed down to us by history without anyone ever laying a hand on it.
The beautiful proportions and the small dimensions further enhance what has been said so far, characteristics that allow it to be inserted even in narrower spaces, more narrow and perfectly located in today's apartments usually of small size. With your purchase, you will also contribute to enhancing our antiques, the Italian ones, the "made in Italy," those of our unsurpassed and ancient craftsmen.
