Attributed to Sebastiano Ricci (Belluno 1659 - Venice 1734)
Holy Family with Saint Anne
Oil on canvas
135 x 100 cm. - with frame 147 x 112 cm.
This Holy Family with Saint Anne is of extraordinary scenic impact. Conceived by the author according to the most canonical pyramidal composition of Leonardo da Vinci's memory, it is enhanced by a studied plasticity of the figures and their perfect articulation in space.
At the top, Saint Joseph, leaning on his staff, serenely watches over the Madonna holding her son in her lap, with whom she exchanges a look full of love, with Anna kneeling in respect before them.
This is a work of excellent quality that re-proposes a composition by the great Baroque painter Sebastiano Ricci (Belluno 1659 - Venice 1734), from the Molinari Pradelli art collection (published in Volpe C., La Raccolta Molinari Pradelli. Paintings of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries, 1984, p. 88, n. 46, and again in the monograph by Daniels J., L'opera completa di Sebastiano Ricci, 1976, p. 111, n. 264)

Although the executive quality might lead us to attribute our canvas to the Venetian master, we prefer, for scruple, to extend the reference to an author working in the workshop or to a close collaborator who, on request, created a similar version.
An artist of extraordinary fame, celebrated by contemporaries and requested by the most prestigious clients, Ricci is considered one of the main figures of the rebirth of Venetian painting in the 1700s. He trained by studying the works of Paolo Veronese and other 16th-century Italian painters, in turn influencing the painters of the new generation, first of all Giambattista Tiepolo.
The work can in fact be read in its original derivation from Veronese models, with the pictorial material absorbed in a luminous layout and in a compositional syntax typical of the Venetian ways of the sixteenth century (also in the individual elements, such as the column and balustrade) and reinterpreted in a contemporary key.
See in particular the beautiful figure of the Virgin, draped in the ancient style, almost a classic fifth statue to the main scene, and in reality the true protagonist of the composition.
