The faces of the protagonists, especially that of the blond and curly-haired Child, are in fact absolutely unmistakable. The dark background, which Amigoni prefers, highlights the luminous complexions and accentuates the volume of the faces and bodies. At the end of his long and extraordinary career, he moved to Spain to Madrid, and became court painter to Ferdinand XVI. His workshop, which became famous especially in portraiture, produced a series of exquisite works with the Virgin as the protagonist. A strong Neapolitan influence acquired from Solimena and De Mura is found in his painting, as well as a Venetian pictorial vein matured during his stay in Venice.
