Description:
A unique piece that combines unusual design with the mastery of carving: an enchanting extendable bookend made in 1947 in solid walnut, hand-carved by the Sardinian sculptor Francesco Nonnis (born in Desulo, 1899/1992) and sold by Marino Cao, a well-known furniture maker from Cagliari (photo no. 10). The bookend (25x13 cm, h.17 cm) extends by 10 cm: from 12 cm to 22 cm. It consists of two peacocks carved in the round (12x7 cm), with crests and wide tails, resting their backs against two rectangular elements (9 cm; h.14 cm): all parts of this artifact are decorated with geometric designs. The base, also rectangular in shape (25x13 cm; h.3 cm), is engraved with a series of Vs forming a decoration called 'Sa spiga'. It is in excellent condition.
