The Madonna della Seggiola (Madonna of the Chair) is a famous oil painting on panel (diameter 71 cm) by Raphael, dating back to around 1513-1514 and kept in the Palatine Gallery of Palazzo Pitti in Florence.
It has been in the Medici collections since the first half of the 16th century and, judging by the format of the panel, was certainly created for a private setting.
The work takes its name from the chair (seggiola) on which Mary is seated with the Child in her arms.
One of the characteristics of the painting is seeing both protagonists turn towards the viewer, but while Mary looks straight ahead, the Child seems to look towards a more distant point. St. John the Baptist attends the scene on the right, emerging from the dark background and making a gesture of prayer to Mary.
She inclines her head towards her son, touching their heads together and creating a situation of intimate family sweetness. Behind the formal beauty there is a very complex geometric compositional scheme, designed to be perfectly inserted into a circular support.
The details are extremely well cared for, making it a work of great formal refinement.
Its great visual richness makes the work "undoubtedly one of the major masterpieces of Renaissance art."
The exceptional notoriety and the extraordinary ability to attract the viewer have made it the most famous and reproduced devotional painting by artists throughout Europe.
