Nicola Levoli (Rimini, 1728 – 1801)
Pair of still lifes with vegetables in a kitchen interior
(2) Oil on canvas cm 71.5 x 108
With frame, cm 80 x 117
The pair under examination, two oil on canvas paintings in horizontal format depicting a Pair of still lifes with vegetables in a kitchen interior, can be attributed, due to their formal and iconographic characteristics, to the hand of the Emilian painter Nicola Levoli (Rimini, 1728 – 1801). Born in Rimini in 1728 with the name of Remigio Enrico Policarpo to his father Giacomo Nicola Policarpo, a surgeon, and Anna Alda Maddalena Sarzetti, in 1747 he was initiated into the monastic life of the Augustinian monastery of San Giacomo Maggiore in Bologna, taking his solemn vows the following year and assuming the name, by which he is known, of Nicola. Always passionate about painting, however, in 1762 he decided to enroll in the Clementine Academy of Bologna, where he was a student of Ubaldo Gandolfi, director of the Academy from 1761. In 1765 he won a competition for flower painting, collaborating with the master on some canvases always of a floral nature. During his career, Levoli also painted some altarpieces and sacred works, now lost. In 1769, he became associated with the convent of Sant'Agostino in Rimini, where he lived until its suppression in 1797 after the French occupation. He was sent to the Convent of the Minor Observants, where he remained until his death in 1801.
Nicola Levoli, whose art has been the subject of a recent re-evaluation, is known, however, mainly for his still life works, which are characterized in most cases as domestic and poetic compositions of Adriatic fish and other edible items. His works are dominated by a full-bodied and material brushstroke, where a strong sensitivity towards a truthful realism emerges, as well as an absolute precision and attention to detail. His compositions are distinguished precisely by their harmonious and balanced presentation, where nothing is left to chance and, on the contrary, there is a refined use of light and shadows to create a sense of depth and dimension.
The pair in examination presents a simple and essential composition, with few objects arranged on a plane and a profusion of vegetables, his main subjects together with fruit, bread, cheese, fish and meat. Precise and meticulous, the two canvases reflect his careful observation of reality, rendered with warm, sober and harmonious colors. Appreciated for their beauty and historical value, they offer us a precious testimony of daily life in 18th-century Italy.
Many important collections possess works by this artist, such as the Museum of the city of Rimini, his birthplace.
The object is in a good state of preservation
