Pietro Liberi (Padua, 1605 – Venice, 1687)
Allegory of Vices
Oil on canvas, 150 × 211 cm
The man falls defeated by wine, gambling, and lust: the first card in the deck held by the dwarf in the center is a two of spades, an allusion to the female sex. A smaller version of the subject is kept at the Querini Stampalia Foundation in Venice (U. Ruggeri, Pietro e Marco Liberi. Pittori nella Venezia del Seicento, Rimini 1996, pp. 148-149 n. P76).
