Gregorio Lazzarini (Venice 1655 - Villabona Veronese 1730) - Christ and the Samaritan Woman at the Well.  Translated
Description:
Gregorio Lazzarini (Venice 1655 - Villabona Veronese 1730) - Christ and the Samaritan Woman at the Well. 82.5 x 108 cm (unframed) - 103 x 128 cm (framed). Oil on canvas, in a wooden frame. Gregorio Lazzarini represents one of the protagonists of Venetian painting between the 17th and 18th centuries. Trained in the workshop of Francesco Rosa and later with Girolamo Brusaferro, he developed a figurative language that combined the compositional solidity of late Baroque with a progressive opening towards the luminous clarity that would characterize the next generation. He was the master of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, to whom he transmitted his mastery of drawing and his sensitivity to Venetian color. His works, present in Venetian and Veneto churches and collections, document a long career and consistent quality production. The stylistic comparison with documented works by Lazzarini confidently attributes the canvas to his hand. The composition reveals the Roman-Bolognese classicism that distinguishes the artist, mediated through the lessons of Carlo Maratta and 17th-century tradition: the figures are arranged with legible clarity, the theatricality of the scene is controlled and never emphatic. The treatment of the drapery, with its ample folds constructed by chromatic masses rather than chiaroscuro, the physiognomy of the characters, the face of Christ, the profile of the Samaritan woman, and the management of the landscape space in the background find precise parallels in the artist's autographed sacred compositions. The scene depicts the encounter of Christ with the Samaritan woman at Jacob's well (Jn 4:1-42). Christ is seated on the edge of the well, wrapped in the traditional red and blue mantle, and speaks to the woman who holds an amphora, caught in an attitude of attentive concentration. On the left, the group of disciples closes the composition, while in the background an open landscape with trees and distant mountains articulates the spatial depth. The palette, centered on warm harmonies animated by a gray-blue sky, is fully consistent with Venetian color culture of the late 17th century. Condition report: Lined canvas.
