Painting "Hillside Landscape at Sunset with Stream" – Early 20th Century
Enchanting and evocative oil painting on canvas from the first half of the 20th century (early 1900s), depicting a vast and lyrical hilly landscape captured in the warm, golden light of twilight.
The work is distinguished by a sweeping composition of great classical balance: a dirt road on the left invites the viewer's gaze towards the background, bordering a placid body of water in the foreground on the right, in which the foliage of the trees and the sky's hues are reflected. In the background, a small rural village with a pointed bell tower can be discerned, immersed in the bluish evening mist, while the horizon ignites with vibrant orange and yellow tones.
Stylistic and Pictorial Details
Color Palette: Excellent atmospheric rendering based on the contrast between the warm tones of the sunset (orange, ochre, gold) and the cool tones of the shadowed vegetation and distant hills (deep greens, browns, and blue-violet).
Technique: The brushwork is rich and confident, particularly evident in the rendering of the tree trunks in the foreground, where the raking light of the setting sun creates strong luminous accents, and in the application of paint to the low vegetation.
Atmosphere: The work evokes a sense of idyllic peace, typical of late 19th and early 20th-century landscape painting, faithful to the tradition of lyrical naturalism.
Conditions and Material Support
Support: Original oil on canvas. The back shows the original canvas mounted on a sturdy, coeval wooden stretcher with wedge joints, in excellent structural condition, with no apparent sagging of the tension.
Condition: The paint layer is healthy, with a natural patina that gives depth to the colors and a very slight, charming, period-appropriate "craquelure" that guarantees its authenticity. No invasive restorations or paint losses are evident.
Frame: The painting is enhanced by a substantial and elegant coeval black lacquered wood frame, enriched by an inner profile richly carved with geometric/fluted motifs, which masterfully frames and highlights the brightness of the canvas.
Dimensions
135 x 85 cm including the frame, 110 x 59 cm for the canvas alone.
