Carved and Polychrome Wood Sculpture – Putto / Curtain-Holder Angel - late 17th, early 18th century.
Fascinating and vigorous antique sculpture in carved, lacquered, and polychrome wood, depicting a putto (or cherub) in a dynamic and floating pose.
The work, presumably originally conceived as an architectural decorative element, as an antique furnishing piece, or as a refined curtain holder, is distinguished by the remarkable expressive force of the face and the plasticity of the body.
The anatomy of the putto is rendered with full and generous forms, typical of the Baroque and Late-Baroque taste.
The face is characterized by pronounced cheeks, finely red-painted lips, and an intense, sideways gaze.
The hair is sculpted in large, dark, defined curls.
The figure is partially cinched by a gilded leaf drapery, carved with deep, angular folds that create a strong interplay of light and shadow.
The polychromy of the skin, with warm and natural tones, enhances the three-dimensionality of the sculpture. A piece of great character and visual impact, perfect for collectors of antique pieces or as a dramatic decorative element in both classic and contemporary settings.
