Immaculate Conception, Genoa, second half of the 18th century  Translated
Description:
Wooden sculpture depicting the Immaculate Conception, carved with a slender posture and composed expressive sweetness. The Madonna is represented in prayer, with her hands clasped and her head slightly bowed, according to a widely diffused devotional iconography, here interpreted with a dynamic and delicate taste. The mantle with soft folds envelops the figure with elegant movement, while the polychromy in light tones of blue, white, and pink, finished with golden touches, contributes to the ornamental quality of the whole. At the base appears the usual motif of the defeated serpent, a symbol of evil overcome by the purity of the Virgin. A work of pleasant presence, well representative of Ligurian devotional sculpture from the late eighteenth century.
