Description:
The work depicts Croda Rossa d’Ampezzo (Hohe Gaisl) as seen from the valley floor near Carbonin, at the starting point of the path towards the Prato Piazza plateau. The composition is organized with a rigorous division of perspective planes: in the foreground, the stony streambed and low vegetation introduce a diagonal line that guides the gaze towards the central mass of the Dolomite massif.
Paul Schuler, an Austrian painter active in the first half of the 20th century, is distinguished by his textured and analytical brushwork. In the rocky walls, the color is applied with dense strokes that convey the structural complexity of the dolomite, accentuated by the contrast between brightly lit areas and shaded gullies where snow deposits persist. The color palette balances the greens of the conifers with variations of gray and blue that define the mountain's volumes. The diffused brightness of the sky, dotted with cloud formations, gives the entire scene an atmospheric clarity typical of the central hours of the day at high altitudes. The work is signed “Paul Schuler” in the lower left, while on the back of the frame there is an autograph inscription (Hohe Gaisl).
