Ancient Greek Icon.
"The Annunciate Virgin"
Tempera on gold leaf panel.
Larch wood.
Late 17th century period.
Measurements: 40 x 29 cm.
A splendid Greek icon depicting the Virgin with her hands crossed on her chest in an attitude of great devotion, ready to receive the announcement of her divine maternity.
The image evokes great emotion with its face expressing grace and purity, framed by a halo of distinctly supernatural tones.
The golden background is finely decorated with rich chasing that outlines the halo, and manages to give the figure a regal and overtly spiritual appearance.
The icon is in very good condition considering its age and with no restoration interventions, very sound, without cracks or lifting of the paint layer.
The panel is painted on a single piece of larch wood, a hard and compact wood, free from woodworm attacks.
Minor losses are limited to the perimeter areas.
It is interesting to note how the signs of time scattered on the surface of the work, rather than disturbing the view, are highly evocative and enhance its charm and powerful Christian message.
