Tantalus, liqueur case - Victorian Era
A magnificent and exceptionally elegant table tantalus, crafted in the late 19th century, reflecting the refined Victorian taste for objects dedicated to the ritual of spirits.
A tantalus is a small wooden cabinet containing two or three decanters. Its distinguishing feature is the presence of a lock and key.
The purpose was to prevent unauthorized individuals from consuming the contents (particularly "servants and minor children"), while still allowing them to be displayed. The name is a reference to the unfulfilled temptations of the Greek mythological figure Tantalus.
First patented in 1879 by John Betjemann.
The structure, in fine polished wood with rich chased brass applications, houses a pair of superb hand-cut crystal bottles, complete with their original faceted stoppers.
A distinctive element of the cabinet is the refined, openable brass upper arch, designed as a locking and support system, a detail that gives the tantalus an exclusive and scenic character.
The bottles, embellished with engraved "Whisky" and "Cognac" medallions suspended by thin silver-plated chains, reflect the discreet luxury of European aristocratic homes and gentlemen's clubs of the era.
The extraordinary craftsmanship of the crystal, rich in deep geometric cuts and play of light, harmonizes perfectly with the warmth of the wood and the brilliance of the brass, creating an ensemble of great decorative presence.
