Etching by Giuseppe Zocchi (1716-1767) depicting the Calcio festival in Piazza Santa Croce in Florence. At the bottom of the image is the title: "View of the Church and Piazza of S. Croce with the Calcio festival held in the year 1738 in the Royal presence of the reigning Sovereigns." The print is taken from the volume "Scelta di XXIV vedute delle principali contrade, piazze, chiese e palazzi della città di Firenze" (Selection of XXIV views of the main streets, squares, churches, and palaces of the city of Florence), published in Florence in the summer of 1744 and dedicated to Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Austria.
The views that make up the volume combine the Florentine 17th-century tradition with the study of contemporary Venetian models and the use of the camera obscura, which provides a precise and analytical vision of the urban spaces.
