Italian sculptor (17th century) - Hercules and Cerberus.  Translated
Description:
Italian sculptor (17th century) - Hercules and Cerberus. 18 x 9.5 x H 37 cm. Full-figure carved alabaster sculpture. Separate alabaster base. The sculpture depicts the climax of Hercules' twelfth labor: the capture of Cerberus, the three-headed dog guarding the Underworld. The hero is shown in the act of overpowering the beast, grabbing it firmly as the monster buckles under his grip. The composition, dynamic and well-balanced in its volumes, reveals a direct knowledge of ancient models and Roman sculptural tradition, filtered through the Baroque taste of the 17th century. The anatomical rendering of Hercules' body, vigorous but not emphatic, and the treatment of the alabaster surfaces bear witness to the hand of a skilled sculptor, active in the realm of Roman decorative and collectible production of the 17th century.
