Oil on canvas. The signature H.Sanders is present on the barrel on the bottom left. The scene, set outdoors on a street in a Flemish city, with a canal in the background on the left, features a vegetable seller in the foreground behind her stall, which is arranged with a varied composition of winter vegetables, a still life composed of cauliflower, savoy cabbage, carrots, and corn cobs. Next to the woman, a passerby carrying a harpoon on his shoulder is offering her fish, evidently the result of his catch that he wishes to sell. The setting suggests Amsterdam, the city where the Dutch painter Hercules (or Herkules) Sanders was born and lived. He established himself mainly as a portraitist, but a genre scene set indoors by him is known, currently at the Detroit Institute of Arts, dated 1647 and titled "Woman Cleaning Fish," whose female figure strongly resembles the seller in the work presented here. Restored and relined, the painting is presented in a period-style frame.
