Oil on canvas. In an Italian landscape, the scene is centered on a group of townspeople trying to escape from the besieged and burning city, carrying their belongings on a cart and leading a small flock; a small group of enemy soldiers, however, has pursued them and is trying to stop them, with weapons drawn. On the back of the stretcher, there is a pencil inscription attributing the work to Jan Both (1618 - 1652), a Dutch painter known primarily for his Italianate landscapes, often animated by figures. The painting has undergone restoration and re-stretching in the past. It currently needs cleaning. It is presented in a period-style frame.
