Extraordinary pair of Louis XVI “Valadier” Lanterns, among the highest expressions of refined Roman production of the late eighteenth century. Attributed to the celebrated workshop of Luigi Valadier, these works embody the formal balance and classical purity typical of the Roman Neoclassical taste.
The lanterns are supported by elegant, finely burnished bronze male figures, depicted in a dynamic pose while gracefully resting one foot on a gilded sphere. The bodies, modeled with harmonious anatomy and ideal proportions, recall the aesthetics of the antique, so dear to the Roman figurative culture of the late eighteenth century. The figures support above their heads a refined gilded bronze brazier, embellished with hanging chains and decorative details chiseled with extreme skill.
The chromatic contrast between the burnished bronze of the figures and the rich mercury gilding of the ornamental parts creates a scenographic effect of great visual impact. The circular base in white statuary marble, finished with an elegant gilded molding, gives stability and further nobility to the whole.
This pair represents a rare and museum-quality example of Roman high craftsmanship, an expression of the synthesis between sculpture, goldsmithing, and decorative arts that made the Valadier workshop famous in the great aristocratic and ecclesiastical commissions of the time.
