Pair of Venetian Views  Translated
Description:
Pair of Venetian Views Giacomo Guardi (Venice 1764-1835) Gouache on paper Contemporary gilt frames Late 18th century Measurements 25 cm x 42 cm Frame 35 cm x 52 cm Excellent condition These two magnificent Venetian views, painted in gouache on paper towards the end of the 18th century, are attributed to Giacomo Guardi and his renowned workshop. They depict two spectacular panoramas of the Grand Canal, one with the Rialto Bridge and the Palazzo dei Camerlenghi, the other with the Church of Santa Maria della Carità and the Accademia square. It is interesting to admire the Church as it appeared in the 18th century, with its Gothic-style facade. The pyramidal spires with pinnacles and aedicule spires disappeared in the 19th century and are only preserved in period paintings. The two works are executed with impressive pictorial quality, and the photos do not manage to convey the real delicacy of the details described with a fine brushstroke. Giacomo Guardi (Venice, April 13, 1764 - Venice, November 3, 1835) was a painter specializing in the depiction of Venetian views. Son of the great vedutist Francesco Guardi, he dedicated himself to continuing his father's activity, painting many views and capriccios. He followed his illustrious father's style but in a more repetitive and commercial manner, avoiding the major works that made his father famous. His production consists of numerous small-format compositions, often gouaches or watercolors on paper, intended to satisfy the requests of wealthy travelers who, upon returning from their Grand Tour, wished to take home an elegant souvenir of the lagoon city. Most of his works are small, easily transportable Venetian views that still demonstrate considerable technical and artistic skill, highly appreciated for their exquisite elegance. The two splendid jewels presented here highlight all the peculiarities of his artistic vein, distinguishing themselves for their extremely fine pictorial quality and for their unmistakable chromaticism characterized by luminous tones, where blue is the predominant color. Furthermore, the two gouaches are of beautiful size, exceeding the very small standard dimensions of this type of view. Despite some signs of age, they are in excellent condition, complete with splendid original gilt frames of typically Venetian manufacture. Giacomo Guardi's paintings have been significantly re-evaluated in recent years. Even though they are extremely small, his gouaches and watercolors are highly sought after by collectors and achieve significant prices at international auctions.
