Mid-Century Wooden Painted Double Bed Headboard with Shell and Volutes from the 1950s, handcrafted in fir wood. This antique double bed headboard is a panel with a soft shaped line, 170 cm high and 180 cm wide, ideal for a double bed, with two side uprights and an openwork carving that enhances the polychrome decoration. This antique Italian bed headboard is richly hand-painted with plant elements, volutes that follow the openwork carving, acanthus leaves that surmount and enclose the central shell. It is the work of a decorator from the mid-1950s who painted this headboard with very warm tones, including the blue of the central shell, ochre, Naples red, light green, delicate and pastel nuances.
It comes from a private Lombard collection and is in a good state of conservation, with signs of wear consistent with use. There are holes on the back for hanging the headboard on the wall.
In Greek and Roman myths, shells were a symbol of prosperity, rebirth, and indicated the source of fertility. As an ornamental motif, the shell manifests itself during Mannerism, an ornamental evolution that is connected to that of grotesques, later expanded by the Baroque century, especially in France, where this decorative motif is connected to the Rocaille.
