Description George III Sterling Silver Tankard, Peter & Ann Bateman, London, 1791 An exceptional example of a George III period silver tankard, made by the renowned Georgian silversmiths Peter and Anne Bateman, son and daughter-in-law of Hester, who continued the business after her death. The body is of cylindrical form with a decorative band and a flared base. The domed lid is embellished with an elegant pierced finial, featuring scrolls and hearts, while the hollow handle has a traditional heart-shaped terminal. Sterling silver hallmarked with 5 hallmarks: Maker's mark: Peter & Ann Bateman Passant Lion: alloy mark. Guarantee control of the sterling title 925/1000 Leopard's head with crown: city of London Date letter year: 1791 Duty mark: King George III head Dimensions HxWxD: 20.5cm x 17.5cm x 12cm Weight 740g Provenance Private collection Conditions Slight signs of wear consistent with age and superficial scratches.
