Genre Scene: Interior with Bagpipers – Oil on Panel, 19th Century
Description of the work: Fine oil painting on panel from the second half of the 19th century, depicting a moment of daily life with a rural and popular flavour. The scene takes place in a humble and dimly lit interior, where the light of a single candle (visible on the right) shapes the figures with a marked chiaroscuro effect.
The main subject portrays an elderly man and a young man intent on tuning or repairing a bagpipe (or a cornamuse), an instrument that is a symbol of pastoral tradition. In the background, a female figure seated on a straw chair seems to observe or wait, completing the domestic narration.
