Tuscany, 18th century, Putto with dolphin  Translated
Description:
Tuscany, 18th century Putto with dolphin Marble, height 55 cm The sculpture in question, crafted from precious marble, depicts a putto, or more precisely, a water spirit (perhaps a young Eros or an amorino), completely nude with a chubby physique. The marble, despite its coldness, is worked to suggest the softness and plumpness of the childlike figure, typical of Renaissance and late Renaissance ideals of beauty. The putto is captured in a dynamic and seemingly unstable pose, with its right foot resting on a dolphin, often associated with Poseidon, which serves as a base here. This pursuit of dynamism and a less-than-frontal pose was a distinctive feature of plastic art from the 16th century onwards, anticipating the typically 18th-century predilection for the serpentine figure: the subject, in fact, exhibits a slight contrapposto and a twist of the torso, elements that enhance the sense of movement in the whole. With its right hand, it holds a sort of vessel above its head, suggesting its original function as a decorative fountain, while the left hand appears to be holding or embracing the dolphin's tail. The face is smiling and playful, with thick curls and an expression of lively and childlike innocence. Due to its conformation, this type of sculpture could indeed have been intended to embellish Medici villas and gardens, places where water and festive sculpture were fundamental elements (as in the famous fountains of the Boboli Gardens). This joyful naturalism represented a typical characteristic of the Tuscan school of the 18th century, which drew inspiration from the timeless Florentine tradition of sculptors like Andrea del Verrocchio and Giambologna. The 16th century in Tuscany was, in fact, a period of intense sculptural creativity, dominated first by the Renaissance peak and then by Mannerism. Andrea del Verrocchio's bronze Putto with Dolphin, dating from around 1470 and housed in Palazzo Vecchio, serves as an archetypal model for our sculpture, characterized by extraordinary mobility conceived for an unstable fountain pose, initially intended for Villa Careggi. Over the course of the 16th century, sculptors like Tribolo and Ammannati also populated the ducal fountains with countless putti and marine figures, often conceived not as individual masterpieces but as elements of a complex hydraulic and allegorical machine.
