Christ Pantocrator – Russian Icon, 19th Century  Translated
Description:
The Russian icon Christ Pantocrator – 19th Century represents a majestic work from the Moscow school, created with egg tempera on panel and of large dimensions (71 x 55 cm). The term Pantocrator, of Greek origin, means "Ruler of All" and indicates Christ in his dual human and divine nature, source and measure of the universe. The face of the Savior, rendered with symmetrical features and a penetrating gaze, communicates both power and mercy. With his right hand, Christ blesses, while with his left he holds the open Book of Gospels, where the evangelical words can be read: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" (Mt 11:28). This phrase highlights Christ's salvific function and invites the observer to spiritual communion. The palette, dominated by shades of red and blue, evokes the mystery of the Incarnation: red, symbolizing divine nature and sacrifice, and blue, signifying humanity and compassion. Executed with rigor and delicacy, the icon expresses the very high level reached by the Moscow workshops of the 19th century. The compositional harmony and theological depth make this work a testament to the continuity of Orthodox tradition and a masterpiece of Russian sacred art, ideal for collectors and connoisseurs.  Translated
