Saint Basil the Great – Russian icon, late 16th century  Translated
Description:
The Russian icon Saint Basil the Great – Late 16th century, Moscow, is a monumental work of extraordinary historical and artistic importance, executed in egg tempera on wood panel and measuring 139 x 44 cm. It depicts Saint Basil the Great, Archbishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia, one of the most revered Fathers of the Eastern Church and author of the Divine Liturgy that bears his name. The saint is represented frontally, according to Byzantine tradition, holding the Gospel book and dressed in sumptuous liturgical vestments: the phelonion decorated with crosses and the scarlet omophorion, a symbol of episcopal grace. The face, austere and spiritual, shows the ascetic wisdom of one of the great theologians of Christian East, while the long, dark beard emphasizes his monastic dignity. The use of warm, golden tones, combined with the firm, linear stroke, harks back to the Muscovite school of the late 16th century, a period of great artistic revival marked by the legacy of Dionysius and the workshops of the Kremlin. The light highlights and the depth of the gaze reveal a highly skilled hand, likely intended for the decoration of an iconostasis in a cathedral or a large monastery. This Russian icon of Saint Basil the Great represents a perfect balance between theological rigor and aesthetic refinement. The accentuated verticality of the figure and the imposing presence of the saint convey majesty and liturgical solemnity, making the work one of the most representative of late medieval Muscovite spirituality. An authentic masterpiece for collectors, scholars, and lovers of Russian sacred art, a symbol of contemplation, doctrine, and divine beauty.  Translated
