"Ecce Homo" Flemish panel from the 16th century  Translated
Description:
"Ecce Homo" Flemish Master Circle of Dieric Bouts (1448-1491) Oil on panel Period: 16th century Panel cm. 38x30 Frame cm. 46x36 Panel painting depicting the face of Christ disfigured by suffering, with his head crowned with thorns in the most traditional image of "Ecce Homo". The gaze is dim, with eyes reddened and swollen with tears in a resigned attitude after the atrocious torments. Christ was scourged and mocked after receiving a crown of thorns on his bleeding head. Pilate presents him to the crowd horribly disfigured by the torture he has endured, uttering the famous words "Ecce Homo". It is one of the most representative and venerated Christian depictions in ancient painting, with the great Masters of all Europe trying their hand at its creation. Among these, the Spanish, German and Nordic painters stand out for their intensity and dramatic realism, especially the Flemish. This impressive painting is a classic example of 16th-century Flemish painting with strong influences from Spanish art, and condenses the pictorial characteristics of these two great schools. The Author, working between Haarlem and Antwerp in the early 16th century, was inspired by the paintings of Quentin Massys and Dieric Bouts, considered the greatest Flemish interpreters of this subject. The particular position of the hands is taken from some works by Dieric Bouts Despite the missing parts, the conditions of the painting are good considering the period, and the pictorial surface has been consolidated with the application of a protective varnish. The very evident craquelure is very effective and makes the work even more fascinating. We issue a stamped and signed certificate of authenticity according to law, which guarantees the period, origin and all the characteristics of the work, drawn up by an antique dealer affiliated with FIMA (ITALIAN FEDERATION OF ART MERCHANTS).
