Vienna 1820, circle of Joseph Danhauser. Elegant console/game table intact  Translated
Description:
Vienna circa 1820. Rare game table (also usable as an elegant console when desired) in practically intact condition from the early Viennese Biedermeier period, from the circle of Joseph Danhauser, a great designer and cabinetmaker of the time (see original drawing of the similar game table no. 15 in the miniature and at the bottom of the page - drawing collection of the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna). Veneered in blond walnut feather with elegant threads, typical of the origin and the most refined Viennese Biedermeier. Dimensions: height 81.5 cm, width 96 cm, depth 48 - 96 cm when open. Work of practical integrity with conservative restoration in a workmanlike manner and shellac polishing applied on the first patina with a museum standard technique. From the warm golden amber color of the blond walnut in patina with French polish finish. The master cabinetmakers of the Biedermeier period knew the places where the best trees grew and kept the secret. To obtain veneers with ventures of such beauty, they also knew the best points of the tree and cut the parts with great skill, obtaining wood effects that constitute the particular attraction of true Biedermeier furniture and represent a uniqueness and excellence in the world of high antique furniture of all ages. Joseph Ulrich Danhauser (1780-1829), great Viennese cabinetmaker, sculptor and designer, documented his range of products in a vast drawn catalog, parts of which (approx. 2,500) have survived the times and are now kept in the MAK (Austrian Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna). This catalog includes, among others, 153 models of chairs, 56 sofas, 179 types of chandeliers and 124 curtains. All these models were numbered consecutively. He boasted a clientele of rank from all over the Austrian monarchy and Germany. Danhauser's exceptional quality and uniqueness as a furniture creator lies in the harmonious combination of concreteness and abstraction, functionality and emotion. Thus he assumed the role of mediator between individuality and anonymity and became one of the most important inspirations for the modern avant-garde movement. The Danhauser manufacture was founded in 1814. It is a point of reference in the history of design and furniture. His very rare surviving original creations are kept in a few museums, castles, important antique shops or prestigious private collections, mostly noble ones.
