"Lagoon landscape with boatmen"
"River landscape with fisherman"
Oil on canvas, 14.4 x 20 cm
This delightful pair of evocative lagoon and river landscapes animated by lively figures is the work of Giuseppe Bernardino Bison (Palmanova, 1762 – Milan, 1844), the famous artist who brilliantly concluded the joyous season of eighteenth-century Venetian painting.
The beautiful pair of paintings studied here, which presents all the peculiar stylistic and chromatic characteristics of the art of Giuseppe Bernardino Bison, can be dated to the early nineteenth century, when the artist had moved to Trieste where he worked diligently to satisfy the requests of the numerous and important collectors of the city, at the time in full economic development under Habsburg rule.
