The present painting depicts a Caritas Romana, a subject that symbolizes selfless devotion. The scene captures the young Pero nursing her father Cimon, imprisoned as an act of compassion and sacrifice that underlines the dramatic intensity of the composition. Zanchi's masterful use of chiaroscuro further enhances the psychological depth and physical tension between the figures.
A leading exponent of Venetian tenebrism, Zanchi was influenced by Luca Giordano and Giovanni Battista Langetti, as well as Francesco Ruschi. His works are characterized by dynamic compositions, rich color palette and intense emotionality, all evident in this painting. Best known for his commissions in Venetian churches and palaces, Zanchi's reputation extended beyond Italy, with significant projects in Munich. From the year 1680, his style evolved towards softer contours and a more refined use of color, anticipating the shift towards Venetian Rococo.
