Domenico Antonio Vaccaro (1678 - 1745)
Assumption of the Virgin, 1700-1706
Oil on canvas, 76 x 50.5 cm
Entry by Anna Maria Cucci
Our painting appears to be a 'sketch' (perhaps for an altarpiece, unknown until today), of which there is a similar example kept at the Certosa and National Museum of San Martino in Naples; similar also in size, being an oil on canvas of cm. 75 x 51, which was attributed to Domenico Antonio Vaccaro by Prof. De Rosa F., in 2003. Another fitting reference appears to be the painting, Saint Dominic Resuscitates Napoleone Orsini (1700- before 1706), oil on canvas, cm. 149 x 75, also attributed to Domenico Antonio Vaccaro, kept at the Museo di Capodimonte in Naples, and published in the General Catalog of Cultural Heritage, code 1500814897, inv. no. Q1773, of 2011. In the upper central part we find a detail (a scene in detail), quite similar to that of our sketch, described in such a precise way that it seems almost superimposable. This work leads us to the certainty of attribution and correct dating.
