19th-century Gilded Wood Fireplace/Wall Mirror with Baroque Motifs
General Description: Magnificent French fireplace/mirror dating back to the second half of the 19th century, characterized by an elegant domed shape and rich Baroque-style decoration.
Made of gilded wood, it features an original patina that testifies to its authenticity and historical experience, giving it a unique charm and great personality.
Technical Features:
Era: 19th century (second half of the 19th century).
Origin: France.
Materials:
Structure: Solid fir wood.
Finish: Gold leaf gilding with red bole details visible under the gilding in several places, a sign of traditional and high-quality workmanship. The gilding shows signs of wear, cracks and small losses that reveal the underlying layer of bole and the preparation of the wood, contributing to its authentic antique patina.
Mirror: Original mirror of the time.
Design and Style:
Shape: Rectangular with an arched upper part in a "violin head" or "priest's hat" shape, typical of the 19th-century style.
Frame: Large and protruding, decorated with a "beaded" motif along the inner edge of the mirror. The surface of the frame features delicate incisions with stylized foliage or "sgraffito" motifs, visible under the gilding, which add depth and texture.
Cimasa (upper part): Richly decorated with shell-shaped volutes (rocaille), stylized acanthus leaf motifs and a central element in the shape of a stylized shell, typical of the Baroque and Rococo repertoire revisited in the 19th century. The cimasa is harmoniously integrated with the shape of the frame.
Condition: Good, consistent with age and use. Presents:
Original patina: The gilding is authentic and not heavily restored, with its warm and lived-in color.
Signs of age: Normal signs of wear, small abrasions, superficial chips and color loss (craquelure) on the gilding, which expose the underlying red bole and wood, giving an authentic appearance.
Structure: Solid and stable. There are no significant structural breaks or coarse repairs. The cracks visible on the cimasa are typical of the natural movement of the pastiglia and do not compromise the structural integrity.
