Paris ca. 1780–1790
Sauce Boat,
Porcelain, H: 16.5 x W: 25 x D: 9.5 cm
Elegant porcelain sauce boat with a single pouring spout and handle, made in Paris between 1780 and 1790, during the height of the Louis XVI period. The slender and balanced shape recalls the nascent neoclassical taste of the era, while the hand-painted decoration blends geometric and symbolic elements into a refined and mysterious ornamental language. The applications of pure gold embellish the artifact with refined elegance.
The body of the sauce boat is decorated with a sophisticated design of cobalt blue geometric zigzag patterns, crossed by golden floral garlands that contain small stylized blue eyes in the center – rare elements, perhaps evocative of almost Masonic or esoteric symbolism, such as the “all-seeing eye”.
The upper edge and the handle are adorned with intertwined laurel branches, a classic symbol of glory, virtue, and triumph, widely used in the decorative repertoire of Greco-Roman inspiration.
The sauce boat is representative of the transition from light and curvilinear Rococo decoration to a new, more restrained, austere, and intellectual aesthetic, a reflection of a changing society.
