French school of the 17th century. Manner of Georges de La Tour (1593-1652). Young woman reading next to a lamp. Oil on canvas. 67 x 55 cm.
La Tour was a penetrating observer of everyday reality. His keen taste for the play of light and shadow made him one of Caravaggio's most original followers. As in the paintings of the great French master, here too the candle is the only source of light, a flame that radiates an abundance of light, the power and mystery of which the painter conveys.
