Studies
He studied at the Academy of Florence from 1836 to 1853, obtaining subsidies and awards. He debuted at the competition of that institute for the year 1845 with an Ariosto-themed subject, The Death of Zerbino. He favored the genre subject connected with biblical or literary history: in 1851 he presented The Widow's Mite at the Academy and in 1857 Blind Milton Dictating Paradise Lost to His Daughters (both in Florence, Gallery of Modern Art of Palazzo Pitti), works that reveal the artist's attraction to purist forms first and then naturalistic ones. In 1852 he participated in the Florentine Promoter with Spring and later returned with the themes most congenial to him: The Last Confession of Beatrice Cenci (1855), Torquato Tasso at the convent of S. Onofrio, Rebecca at the well, Bice in the basement of Rosate (1856). A subject from contemporary history, set in Piazza della Signoria in Florence, dates to around 1860: The Morning of April 27, 1859, presented at the I National Exhibition of Florence in 1861.
