"The Mother, Flemish Genre Scene", oil on canvas, 46x36cm, datable to the first half of the 18th century, follower of David Teniers the Younger (1610-1690).
The scene opens onto a glimpse of a rural Flemish village, in the center of which is the group of the mother with her 3 children. The woman is placed in the space as a perfect visual fulcrum of the work, sitting on a chair holding the youngest son in her arms, smiling benignly at the viewer together with him. On the right, the two older children seem intent on reading exercises, both holding books in their hands. The whole group is dressed in typical 17th-century Flemish clothes.
In addition to the main group, other elements of interest in the painting, such as on the left the still life section with barrels, baskets and pottery, the representation of the typical wooden houses with narrow and high facades, the landscape glimpse that on the left lets the eye wander towards the horizon. The work takes up subjects and stylistic features typical of David Teniers the Younger's mature manner, re-proposing the theme of the rural genre scene and the 17th-century Flemish family. Teniers' influence is also evidenced by the still life section on the left, where barrels, baskets and copper pots are taken almost faithfully from an element often proposed by the painter in many of his canvases. A painting of beautiful workmanship and pleasant decorative impact.
