In a sparsely furnished room, an elderly woman sits reading, or perhaps meditating, with the book resting on the small table under the window, while her little dog sleeps curled up on a bench to the woman's right. The scene is rich in finely depicted details; from the window, with the curtains raised to let in the light that illuminates the scene, one can glimpse figures walking on a road that leads to a fortified building. The German painter August Friedrich Siegert became famous primarily for his portraits and genre scenes that depict moments of daily life with great attention to detail and a touch of realism.
