Henrick Van Lint (attr.), Scene with figures among classical antiquities, oil on canvas, 17th century
Fascinating composition of the Flemish school, attributed to the circle of Henrick Van Lint (Antwerp 1684 - Rome 1763), a master known for his architectural landscapes populated by minute figures. The work represents a scene set in a grotto among ruins and parts of classical monuments and animated by groups of figures engaged in different activities: dialogues, theatrical gestures, rest or contemplation of ancient sculptures.
The imposing classical ruins - decorated sarcophagi, columns, zoomorphic fountains - are depicted with extraordinary perspective skill and scenographic sense, evoking an ideal of ancient Rome through the cultured and imaginative gaze of Northern painters active in Italy in the seventeenth century.
The painting, rich in details and embellished by a warm golden light that filters through the openings of the monumental arch, combines the narrative elegance of the "capriccio" genre with the visual heritage of historical painting.
