Christian Reder (Leipzig 1656 - Rome 1729)
Landscape with pastoral idyll
Oil on canvas
66 x 132 cm - Framed 76 x 143 cm
We present this pleasing work, of which the matching pendant is also available (link), depicting a landscape enveloped in a pastoral and Arcadian atmosphere, attributable to the hand of Christian Reder (Leipzig 1656 - Rome 1729), an artist of Nordic origin but known in Italy as Monsù Leandro.
Although known in collecting circles as a painter specializing in battles, his production also includes numerous landscapes and typical genre scenes such as ours, especially relating to his initial stay in the Veneto region and made on commission.
After an apprenticeship in Hamburg, he was first in London, then moved permanently to Italy, initially to Venice and finally to Rome where he spent the rest of his life with considerable success, following the advice of his friend Peter van Bloemen, known as lo Stendardo, who had stayed in the Urbe from 1685 to 1694. The influence of Borgognone, the greatest interpreter and innovator of the war genre in a Baroque key, is also evident in his works.
The composition of the work is centered on the group of shepherds on horseback and on foot who are taking care of their flocks: the small theater that sees a shepherd on horseback playing a musical instrument similar to a mandolin to enliven the stop makes the scene affected.
For comparative purposes, we can compare our painting with the two scenes from the Civic Museum Collection of Castelfranco, which could represent a trace of the artist's stay in the Veneto region; like the canvas we propose, they are of particular interest for the surprising chromatic affinities, especially in the delicate tones of the backgrounds, and stylistic affinities, in the rendering of the figures of 'bambocciante' taste, in a way that recalls that of Luca Carlevarijs.

Paints of this size and subject matter, often made in series, were commissioned to be placed in palaces or country villas. Shape and dimensions would suggest that the canvases were originally placed as overdoors, or created to embellish part of a boiserie.
